Origins and Studies
Alexandra Mastrogiannakis–Marini was born in Thymiana, Chios, and today she lives and works professionally in Kyparissia, where she has linked her scientific and professional career with her contribution to the field of diagnostic medicine. She studied at the Medical School of the University of Athens, laying the foundations early for a long scientific journey focused on Microbiology and Biopathology.
The first professional steps
After completing her studies, she served as a rural doctor in Pyrgi, Chios, and subsequently worked at the Chios Hospital, gaining valuable experience in the field of clinical medicine and coming into direct contact with the daily needs of patients. This initial professional path was a significant milestone in shaping her scientific career, enhancing her knowledge, clinical judgment, and dedication to quality medical care.
Specialisation and Scientific Training
She completed her specialisation in Microbiology – Biopathology at «Agia Sofia» Children's Hospital in Athens, under the internationally renowned Professor of Microbiology, Antigoni Arseni. During her specialisation, she trained in subjects such as Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, while she focused particularly on Haematology, with an emphasis on leukaemias and haemoglobinopathies, under the supervision of the late Aris Karaklis, then Director of the Haematology Laboratory and Blood Donation at «Agia Sofia» Children's Hospital.
Research Project
From the very first years of her scientific career, she actively participated in the research work of the laboratory at «Agia Sofia» Children's Hospital. During her specialisation, she completed the theses «Eyelash Staining in Pseudomonas» and «Acinetobacter calcoaceticus as a cause of sepsis in newborns» (A. Mastroyiannakis, E. Malamou, A. Arseni), which was presented at the Panhellenic Medical Congress in Athens in 1985. She also participated in the research work «Mycoplasma as a cause of male infertility», under the supervision of the infectious disease specialist and Professor of Pathology at the University of Athens, Mrs. Yamarellou.
Publications and Scientific Activity
She has published scientific papers and actively participated in numerous industry conferences and seminars, maintaining a consistently vibrant and meaningful presence in the scientific community. At the same time, she systematically participates in educational programmes and scientific events organised by the Microbiological Society, remaining continuously connected with the developments in modern laboratory medicine.
Collaborations and Scientific Presence
He collaborates with the Department of Microbiology at the University of Athens as part of the WHONET programme for the study of community microbial resistance to antibiotics, while also participating in the ATLAS programme, the Central Support System for Student Internships of all Higher Education Institutions in the country. He is a member of the Hellenic Society of Immunology and a founding member of the MEDISYN Cooperative of Laboratory Physicians, whilst also actively participating in broader scientific and social initiatives.
From 1985 to the present day
Since 1985, they have been continuously offering their services as a Microbiologist – Pathologist in the prefecture of Messenia, and particularly in the province of Trifylia. Today, they boast a fully equipped laboratory environment in Kyparissia, with modern machinery and analysers, supported by Microbiologist – Pathologist doctors, a biologist, specialised paramedical staff, nurses, and administrative support, continuing to serve people and health with the same dedication.
